The Different Types Of Industrial Distillation

Date:17 June, 2020   |   No Comments   |   Posted By Team Alaquainc

Distillation is a process that is used in various industries for various industrial applications. Not only the process of distillation used in various applications but there are various ways of performing the distillation process as well. The different types of distillation processes have their own advantages and disadvantages in the industry. The different types of industrial distillation processes depend on various things. For example, if we talk about the speed and fast process of the industrial distillation system, then the name that would come in our mind is a wiped film distillation system. However, a wiped film distillation process is not a good solution for the fine separation of the components.

The fractional distillation process typically achieves greater separation of components and operates at a slower pace compared to wiped film distillation.

Let’s have a look at the various types of distillation which are used in various industries.

  • Simple distillation:

Various labs perform the simple distillation process, which represents the most basic and simplest form of the distillation system. The simple distillation process involves the boiling of the flask or you can say still pot. While, heat the solution in the boiling flask until it vaporizes. Then, cool the solution in the condenser and transfer it to the receiver flask.

  • Short path distillation:

Short path distillation has a brief vapor travel to the condenser, ensuring fast speed and lower costs than alternative methods. However, in short path distillation, the risk of degradation will always be there.

  • Molecular distillation:

During molecular distillation, the short path reduces the temperature, compelling vapor molecules to enter the condenser. Moreover, Vacuum traps eliminate molecules moving in the opposite direction.

  • Fractional distillation:

During fractional distillation, position a column between the condenser and the boiling flask. While, apply heat to the solution, generating vapors. The fractional column facilitates multiple distillations of the vapors, enhancing the separation of components.

  • Thin-film distillation:

In the process of the thin film distillation, the solution is fed to the heated cylinder. The blade and roller in the cylinder spread the solution into a thin film, which undergoes additional heating, turning into vapors for condensation, reducing degradation.

  • Spinning band distillation:

The process of spinning band distillation is very similar to the fractional distillation method. In this method, a lengthy column and a spinning band generate vapor, enhancing distillation efficiency by converting it into liquid. Consequently, it increases the fine separation of the compounds.
