The basic meaning of crystallization wastewater treatment is the method of separation. This separation process produces either crystals or precipitates from a liquid or gaseous form. The solid crystals produced from the process of crystallization are very pure. The process of crystallization serves as a purification method in industries. Industries also refer to the process of salt crystallization as brine treatment. This crystallization process is very common in industries for the treatment of wastewater. For the process of crystallization to happen, it is mandatory for the solution that it should be supersaturated. In the process of crystallization, the method of supersaturation is different from each other.

Following are the three different ways of achieving the method of supersaturation-

  • Cooling down the solution achieves supersaturation while experiencing negligible or minimal evaporation.
  • Little cooling can also produce supersaturation by evaporating the solvent.
  • Combining cooling and adiabatic evaporation achieves supersaturation in the production method. This combination is also referred to as vacuum crystallization.

But there is one thing that you should keep in mind, in the crystallization process the solutes should have a curve of solubility which will be able to decrease according to the temperature if the crystallization process uses supersaturation through cooling.

Evaporating the solvent exclusively in temperature-dependent solubility regions achieves supersaturation. Vacuum crystallization combines evaporation and cooling, subjecting the solution to vacuum conditions, causing the solvent to evaporate suddenly, and cooling the solution through the adiabatic process. This method is one of the most common methods for achieving supersaturation in the industrial world. However, every method of achieving supersaturation is in practice in the industrial crystallization process depending on the properties and characteristics. The process of crystallization is not an easy one and is the most vital part of the production of solid crystals from the liquid form.

Steps:

First, concentrate the solution and then cool it down until the solute concentration exceeds the solubility. As a result, the solute forms pure crystals. The crystallization speed defines how quickly the crystals form. Industries employ the crystallization wastewater treatment process in various applications. The industrial use of crystallization does not always obtain pure crystals. Most of the time the crystallization process is used for the wider treatment of liquid waste in a river or the sea.
